Compatibility Analysis of the LSND Evidence and the KARMEN Exclusion for ν̄μ→ ν̄e Oscillations
نویسنده
چکیده
A combined statistical analysis of the experimental results of the LSND and KARMEN ν̄μ→ ν̄e oscillation search is presented. LSND has evidence for neutrino oscillations that is not confirmed by the KARMEN experiment. However, there is a region in the (sin(2Θ),∆m2) parameter space where the results of both experiments are statistically compatible. This joint analysis is based on likelihood functions for both data sets. A frequentist approach creating Monte Carlo samples analogous to the experimental outcome is applied to deduce correct confidence limits. Different schemes of combination can be chosen to provide correct coverage which lead to slightly different confidence regions in (sin(2Θ),∆m2). PACS numbers: 06.20.Dk, 14.60.Pq

Short Baseline Accelerator-based Neutrino Oscillation Searches
We review the status of the search for neutrino oscillations in the short baseline regime with experiments at accelerators. The evidence for ν̄μ→ ν̄e from the LSND experiment is compared with the negative results of the KARMEN ν̄μ→ ν̄e search and with the results from NOMAD and NuTeV in the same flavor mixing channel. We describe the upcoming MiniBooNE experiment which should be sufficiently sensit...
متن کاملThe Search for Neutrino Oscillations ν̄μ→ ν̄e with KARMEN
The neutrino experiment KARMEN is situated at the beam stop neutrino source ISIS. It provides νμ’s, νe’s and ν̄μ’s in equal intensities from the π–μ–decay at rest (DAR). The oscillation channel ν̄μ→ ν̄e is investigated in the appearance mode with a 56 t liquid scintillation calorimeter at a mean distance of 17.7m from the ν–source looking for p ( ν̄e , e + ) n reactions. The cosmic induced backgrou...
متن کاملThe Lsnd Puzzle in the Light of Miniboone Results
Reconciling the LSND evidence1 for ν̄μ → ν̄e oscillations with the global neutrino data reporting evidence and bounds on oscillations remains a long-standing problem for neutrino phenomenology. Recently the MiniBooNE experiment 2,3 added more information to this question. This experiment searches for νμ → νe appearance with a very similar L/Eν range as LSND. No evidence for flavour transitions is...
متن کاملUpdated Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance at MiniBooNE
TheMiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has updated its search for ν̄μ → ν̄e oscillations with data collected through May 2011. This represents a statistics increase of 52% over the result published in 2010. The data favor LSND-like oscillations over a background-only hypothesis at the 91.1% confidence level. While the new result remains equally consistent with LSND, the compatibility with the backgr...
متن کاملSupernova Neutrinos, Lsnd and Miniboone
The unique constraints on neutrino oscillations which can be obtained by measuring the energy spectrum of supernova ν̄e’s are first discussed. The focus is on 4-neutrino mass and mixing models capable of explaining the LSND evidence of ν̄μ → ν̄e oscillations. The potential of the Fermilab neutrino detector MiniBooNE to observe supernova neutrinos is then addressed, and a general description of the...
